Wain, John (1925-VVVV).

Novelista, poeta y ensayista inglés, nacido en Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, en 1925.

Estudió en la Newcastle High School y en la Universidad de Oxford. Entre 1946 y 1949 fue "Felow" del St. John´s College, Oxford, y entre 1949 y 1955 "Lecturer" de Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad de Reading. Además fue profesor de poesía en la Universidad de Oxford hasta 1978.

Crítico de la sociedad inglesa contemporánea, su novela más destacada, Hurry on down (Baja aprisa, 1953), narra las picarescas aventuras de un joven libre que trata de perder cualquier rasgo de la educación convencional recibida; le siguen Living in the present (Vivir en el presente, 1955), The contenders (Los competidores, 1958), A travelling woman (Una viajera, 1959), Strike the father death (Derriba al padre muerto, 1962) y The young visitors (1965).

Como narrador de historias breves, conviene destacar Nuncle (1960), Death of the hind legs (Muerte de las patas traseras, 1966), A winter in the Hills (Un invierno en las colinas, 1970) y The life guard (1971); como poeta, Mixed feelings (1951), Wildtrack (1965), Weep before God (Llorad ante Dios, 1961) y Feng (1975); y como ensayista, Interpretations (Interpretaciones, 1955), Preliminary essays (1957) y Essays on literature and ideas (1963).
