Beaudine, William (1892-1970).

Director de cine estadounidense nacido en Nueva York (Estados Unidos) el 15 de enero de 1892, y fallecido el 18 de marzo de 1970 en Canoga Park (California). Fue uno de los verdaderos pioneros del cine americano y uno de los escasos que supieron mantenerse tras la irrupción del sonoro. Conocido por sus compañeros de profesión como Bill “One-shot” ("una toma") Beaudine, por su legendaria rapidez al dirigir, sus primeros pasos en el cine los da en la primera compañía de David Wark Griffith, la Biograph, primero como ayudante e incluso actor para pasar muy pronto a dirigir sus propias películas. La mayor parte de este material se ha perdido. Hermano del también director Harold Beaudine, se casa en 1915 con Marguerite Fleischer, con la que tendría cuatro hijos, uno de ellos el actor William Beaudine Jr.

En 1926 dirige una de sus mejores y más conocidas películas, Gorriones. Producida por la United Artists y protagonizada por una de las primeras estrellas de la historia del cine, Mary Pickford, es sin lugar a dudas la obra maestra de Beaudine. Sus increíbles decorados, unos pantanos con exuberante vegetación y abundantes caimanes, fueron construidos en los estudios de la Mary Pickford Company, en el bulevar Santa Mónica, por el gran director artístico Harry Oliver. Durante esos años realiza sin descanso películas de todo tipo de géneros en las que se cimenta su fama de artesano efectivo y con capacidad de adaptarse a los más exigentes planes de producción que continuaría durante su etapa sonora y en su posterior paso a la televisión. A su muerte en 1970, y con más de doscientas películas a sus espaldas, es director del DGA, la asociación de los directores de cine de los Estados Unidos.
