Hillyer, Lambert (1889-1969).
Director de cine nacido en South Bend, Indiana, el 8 de julio de 1889 y fallecido en Woodland Hills, California, el 5 de julio de 1969.
Vida
Trabajó durante años como periodista y escritor de cuentos antes de iniciarse en el mundo del espectáculo como artista de vaudeville y actor. Comenzó a trabajar en el cine durante la Primera Guerra Mundial y su experiencia como escritor le convirtió en guionista y, posteriormente, en director de westerns mudos, género en el que se desarrolló su larga carrera. Entre sus primeras películas como director destacan sus colaboraciones con algunas de las mayores estrellas del cine del Oeste en este período, como William S. Hart, uno de los grandes pioneros del género, Tom Mix o Buck Jones. Con la llegada del sonoro, Hillyer continuó su carrera como director en westerns de bajo presupuesto, si bien experimentó en otros géneros como el melodrama o el policíaco. Entre sus más destacadas obras destacan The invisible ray (1936), protagonizada por Boris Karloff y Bela Lugosi, y Dracula's daughter (1936), dos películas de terror en las que demuestra su versatilidad y su gran capacidad para trabajar con presupuestos reducidos. A partir de 1943 dirigió algunos episodios del serial Batman. Pese a sus éxitos en otros géneros, Hillyer regresó a partir de los años cuarenta de forma casi definitiva a su especialidad, el western de bajo presupuesto. Su carrera como director acabó en la mítica productora de "serie B" Monogram Pictures, donde tuvo que trabajar con algunos de los menores presupuestos de su trayectoria. Casi veinte años después de su retirada definitiva del cine, en 1969, Lambert Hillyer murió dejando tras de sí una de las más prolíficas y al mismo tiempo modestas carreras del cine americano.
